GameDay #30 at Nationals

Pirates (12-17) at Nationals (12-18)

1:05–Nationals Park, Washington

Paul Maholm (2-2, 3.26) vs. Matt Chico (0-5, 7.00)

[GameTrax]

It’s a rare Saturday afternoon game for the Pirates. They’ll look to continue were they left off last night against the Nationals, and it looks like they might be able to do that.

Why? The pitching matchup. Maholm has been great, especially lately (he threw a 2-hit CG on Sunday), and Matt Chico of the Nats may be the majors’ worst pitcher. 0-5 is Matt Morris-esque, and a 7 ERA isn’t pretty either. The best reason for hope if you’re a Nats fan: the Bucs stink against lefties (but they didn’t last night).

It’s hard to come of for a reason why the Pirates will lose today, except for that they’re the Pirates.

The teams will wear Homestead Grays uniforms today.

PREDICTIONS

Me: Maholm has been great. Chico stinks. Therefore, Nats win.

Jesse: Maholm dominates…LaRoche dominates…we win.

Dan: Bucs win, Bay homers.

Game 29 Recap–Pirates 11 Nationals 4

[Recap]

the jolly roger

We can say this regarding Phil Dumatrait taking Matt Morris’ rotation spot: It no longer means an automatic loss every 5 games.

Dumatrait actually came out throwing, opening the game with two perfect innings and giving up a run in the 3rd. Then, the lights went out. Literally.

There was a 25 minute delay in the 4th at brand-new Nationals Park because many of the stadium lights suddenly malfunctioned. Dumatrait remained in the game and quickly gave up 3 more runs. He would be lifted.

Luckily, that didn’t matter, because the offense came out swinging against John Lannan. Well, sort of. They worked Lannan beyond belief, and eventually got through for 6 runs in the 3rd, capped by a Bautista 3-run bomb. Lannan looked terrible for a guy who had thrown 20 scoreless innings in a row–struggling to throw strikes and leaving way too many balls over the heart of the plate.

Marte relieved Dumatrait, picking up an easy win since Dumatrait didn’t complete the necessary 5 innings. The rest of the bullpen was solid as well (Grabow, Yates, Capps). Surprising to see no work for JVB and Meek with such a big lead.

The Pirate offense would continue to hit, and Bautista drilled another homer, tripling his season total tonight alone. Hopefully he can keep it up, as his production has been dismal this year.

The only negative: Freddy Sanchez went 0-5 with an error, continuing his major struggles and adding to injury speculation.

The Bucs are 5 under .500 (12-17) and are now a 1/2 game out of the NL Central cellar.

Well, ready or not, here comes Phil Dumatrait. Tonight Phil will make his debut as Matt Morris’ replacement in the starting rotation, and most Pirate fans don’t seem to be enthusiastic about this at all. I don’t quite agree with them. Although Dumatrait was terrible as a starter for the Reds last season, he has made great strides in the Bucco bullpen this year. His ERA is at a very respectable 3.92, and his only loss came in the extra-inning marathon with the Cubs. My biggest concern is how long he’ll hold up–he hasn’t thrown too many pitches at once this year, and despite being a starter last season, well, he only averaged 3 innings per start..(I mentioned he struggled–15.00 ERA!)

For the Nationals, it’s John Lannan. He has been very solid this season and is probably the Nationals’ best pitcher. The fact that he’s lefty doesn’t bode well for us, as the Pirates are doing terribly against left-handed starters so far this season. Lannan also has a 19 inning scoreless streak rolling–(kind of similar to Grabow’s, huh?) that he will put on the line tonight against an offense that mustered just three hits yesterday.

Hopefully the trend of the scoreless streak-carrying-pitcher getting the loss continues for one more night. It doesn’t seem like a good bet, though.

A promising pitcher on the 40-man roster, Olivio Astacio, was released for violating some sort of team policy. There aren’t really any more details, yet. [PG]

The Pens couldn’t pull off the sweep last night, making it kind of a bummer night for Pittsburgh sports. In the words of the mighty [Pensblog]: “Whatev.”

Oh yeah, why is this game starting at 7:35–as opposed to like 7:05 or 7:10 or something (yesterday was 7:10)? Not important at all, but weird.

PREDICTIONS

Me: Dumatrait is under-rated. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but I feel a win. PIRATES WIN

Ev: Dumatrait makes a breakout start and the Bucs win.

Jesse: Lannan owns–Nats win.

Go Buccos!

Game 28 Recap–Pirates 2 Nationals 3

[Box]

Another tough one to swallow.

The Washington staff held us to 3 hits. 2 were solo homers (Doumit and Sanchez). Poor work on offense tonight.

Zach Duke–great job. He put two men on in the 2nd, and they came home on a ground ball single through a drawn-in infield. That was all Duke would allow in 7 great innings of work.

John Grabow came in to relieve–he gave up a hit, hit a batter, and Austin Kearns drove home the go-ahead run in the 8th for the 1st run Grabow allowed all year.

The Bucs hit two balls hard in the 9th, but right at Nationals. Grabow and the Bucs take a tough, tough loss, 3-2.

Dang.

[wnymedia.net]
Nationals Park is the newest stadium in baseball. It features views of Washington D.C. landmarks and such. Pretty fancy place compared to old RFK
Stadium (where the Bucs were just 3-6).

The Nats, meanwhile, can’t quite say the same. Although they started the year 3-0 and are on a 3 game winning streak heading into this one, they still lug a worse record than the Pirates into May. Odalis Perez has pitched well despite an 0-3 record, but hasn’t had run support. It also makes for an interesting fact: He’s the second O. Perez the Pirates are facing in a row.
Hopefully the result is similar.

Duke needs to get his season back on track. His year started off encouragingly, with a couple of decent no-decisions. Had he continued that, I think we’d all have been pleased, but he still struggles to get swings-and-misses and suffered rough beatings from the hard-hitting Cubs and Phillies. One good sign: he managed to recover well in his last start, going 2 more strong innings after giving up 6 runs in his first 4.

This is the start of a stretch of opportunity for the Pirates–and they enter it on a winning note. 7 games against poor teams. The Bucs need to
take advantage and crawl back towards .500 in the next week. If not….

—Matt Morris officially retired. No surprise. The Pirates want him back as a coach though, later on. [STL Today]
—Jose Castillo homered last night for the Giants, snapping an absolutely massive homer-less drought. [Box]

There was a really interesting (and controversial) piece on Costas Now a few days ago that featured Will Leitch, editor of [Deadspin.com] (probably the most successful sports blog on the internet) going at it with writer Buzz Bissinger. Apparently newspapers and such consider blogs to be their arch-enemy, although a lot of the criticism had to do with invading players’ personal lives and posting obscene statements, which we don’t do here. I still tend to side with Leitch, though. Some people just don’t get what blogs areabout. The only way to find out? Read them.
Here’s the [video]. It’s long, but I really recommend watching the whole thing.

As I’m sure you know, it’s Pens-Rangers (Pens going for the sweep) tonight at MSG. You also probably know that Rangers star Sean Avery has been hospitalized with a life-threatening lacerated spleen (originally reported as cardiac arrest).

Avery is probably the most disliked player on the Rangers (maybe Jagr), and of course, Pens fans have been all over him lately. He has a dirty style of play, trash talks, and was recently the center of a controversial play in which he basically danced in front of the net to distract the goalie. Most people around Pittsburgh know this by now, too.

What you may not know all about? [This]:
It’s a rare Pens article by [WHYGAVS] writer, Pat. An unapologetic Pens fan, he admits “I spent most of last night being annoyed by [Avery's] presence.” (like all Pens fans lately). But, like any legitimate human being, he goes on to write “I can only hope things aren’t nearly as bad as [the report] makes it sound.” Even though he’s one of the most hated players in the league, everyone should agree with that, right?
Check out some comments below the article:

“Good get rid of Avery, he’s an a**hole anyway!”–Matt

“What goes around comes around!!!”–mmdd477

Those two comments are possibly the worst display of, well, human morals that I’ve ever seen. Here’s a guy whose life is in danger, and we have people continuing to wish him ill, just because of some things he said or what he does on the hockey rink? Despicable. Avery is a human being and my thoughts and prayers go out for his well-being.
———-
O.K., now we’ll actually go back to talking about tonight’s game.
The Pirate game is on TV because the Pens game is on Versus. That is the
way it should be.
PREDICTIONS

Ev: Duke pitches well but the Nats win in the late innings.
Dan: Washington will take a beating from “da burgh.”
Jesse: Pirates beat an O. Perez (Odalis and Oliver) for the second game in a row.
Me: I like the Pirates in this one. LaRoche will have a huge night–it’s May 1st.

Go Buccos!

Games 26-27 Recap–Pirates and Mets Split

[Tuesday loss Recap]

[Wednesday Win Recap]

First things first:

That was a pretty wild trip to New York.

We of course had the rainout on Monday, setting up a great matchup, Snell vs. Santana, for Tuesday, when nobody in Pittsburgh could watch it.

Santana, arguably the league’s top pitcher and pitching in one of his best chances for another special accomplishment, promptly opened the game by giving up a homer to Nate McLouth on his second pitch of the night.1-0. Bye bye, no-hitter, shutout, whatever.

Johan would only give up one more hit the rest of the way. That hit was a solo shot off the bat of Jason Bay. 2-0.

Ian Snell imploded in the 5th to give up 4 runs, mostly as a result of poor control. One should have been unearned, thanks to a Freddy Sanchez drop that turned a double play into nothing.

Both starters were gone before 6 innings had been completed.

The Bucco bullpen was phenomenal in this one. Marte came in with 1 out and bases loaded and got 2 K’s. Osoria tossed 2 scoreless. Grabow was excellent yet again.

LaRoche walked in a run to make it 4-3, but the Pirates missed so many scoring chances that it wasn’t funny. After that walk, Bautista and Paulino both made harmless outs, stranding 3. Similar occurrences happened almost every inning.

In the 9th, closer Billy Wagner (who’d given up 1 hit and 0 runs all year) came in to end it. Doumit reached on a lazy throw by Reyes. Bixler (pinch-runner) took second on a wild pitch. Gomez and McLouth were retired, but Frederick the Great blooped one to center to miraculously tie the game.

Then, the all-too familiar template came in to play.

Extra innings. Pirates can’t seem to score. Bullpen great……..until…..they run out of arms.

They didn’t exactly run out of arms, but after 10 Russell could choose from Meek, Capps, or Van Benschoten. JVB (1-10 career in majors–was tearing up the minors once again and was called up after the Morris release) came in–to my shock. How could you leave Capps sitting in the bullpen? Well, it turns out Capps was sick in his stomach, and was only a last resort. JVB gave up a single (0-2 pitch), 2 walks, and a walk-off base hit (David Wright) while only recording 1 out (sac bunt). He doesn’t seem to have changed much.

So that was that. Would have been great, but we didn’t expect to have a chance anyway, right? Plus, the Pens won (what else is new?).

Today:

To start, we were delayed by a water main break outside Shea. The game started about 40 minutes late.

Ollie was the Perez we all knew and hated, thinking too much on the mound and not throwing strikes. The 2nd inning: the Pirates scored 7 runs on 2 hits. There were a mere 5 walks, plus an error. Suddenly the game looked like a laugher.

Not so fast with Gorzo on the mound, though. Tom has been erratic (at best) this year, and with his ERA 7 runs would still result in a loss. Gorzo walked 5 men in 5 innings, bringing his total this year to a super-alarming 27BB in 27.1 IP. But, it’s the “R” column that counts, and Tom put up 5 zeroes there. He then left the game in pain, to what effect we aren’t sure of yet. There have been rumblings of an injury all season, though, so to some it was no surprise.

That would do it. The offense would score more garbage runs, and JVB and Meek both got work in with a comfy lead. Finally, a win that doesn’t make us nervous. Well, except that our best pitcher from last year got hurt…

The final was 13-1. We’ve tied the Reds for 5th and head to Washington for 4 (by train) with a record of 11-16.

One note from this series: Gomez played SS in both games, for the first 2 times all year. He’s a WAY better option at the plate than Bixler/Rivas, and if he can do the job in the field, what were we waiting for? He couldn’t have been worse (on offense or defense) than the other two, and actually was very good this week. Hope to keep seeing him there until Jack returns.

Oh, and paging Adam LaRoche: today is the last day of April. That is all.

Late GameDay #27 at Mets

The Pirates already lead 7-0(!!!!!!!!!!) thanks to a second inning fueled by Oliver Perez walks and Mets errors. With Gorzo facing Perez I predicted the MLB walks record in a game to be broken today. Unlikely now with Perez gone though.

[GameTrax]

With last night’s game (loss in 11 innings) ending late and this one starting early, I couldn’t get a recap up. I’ll cover both games of this series after this one ends.

GameDay #26b at Mets

See the original [GameDay] before the rainout for more on this one.

Same teams, same time, same pitchers.

The only difference? The Pens play tonight at the exact same time, in the exact same city, and on the exact same channel. No TV tonight.

Are the Pens a way bigger deal? Duh. But I wanted to watch this game. Snell vs. Santana could make for a fun matchup. Couldn’t Versus pick up the Pens tonight or something?

Oh well. I’ll have the Bucs on the radio as I watch the Pens try and win at MSG.

Here’s the [GameTrax].

The 2008 All Star Game ballots are out! Head there and vote like crazy! You could go with the all-Pirate ballot, but be sure to include Nate McLouth. Xavier Nady would also make a good candidate, and feel free to write in Ryan Doumit at catcher.

[Here's the link. VOTE!]

PREDICTIONS FOR TONIGHT

Me: Nobody gives us a chance to beat Johan. Nobody in Pittsburgh even cares about the Pirates tonight. Snell and the Pirates win an incredible game that nobody sees.

Jesse: Santana. (I’ll assume that means he’s taking the Mets)

Bucs-Mets Rained Out

Dang.
The first rainout of the year comes an hour before possibly the most anticipated match-up so far this season (for me, anyways). Now Santana will face Snell tomorrow night, when we can’t watch it because of the Penguin game.
It’s raining here in Pittsburgh, too. Jeeez!

GameDay #26 at Mets

Pirates (10-15) at Mets (13-11)

7:10–Shea Stadium, New York

Ian Snell (2-1, 4.45) vs. Johan Santana (3-2, 3.12)

[GameTrax]

Shea Stadium

[fromtheflightdeck.com]

Shea Stadium is enduring its final years, and will give way to Citi Field (being built in the parking lot) by the 2009 season. It’s no surprise that picture was taken from a plane. Shea is really close to LaGuardia Airport and planes zoom by throughout all the Mets games.

This is a game I’d highly recommend watching. It pits the Bucs’ staff ace, Ian Snell, against possibly the ace of all of baseball, Johan Santana. Santana dominated with the Twins, racking up three all-star appearances, two Cy Youngs, and a “pitching triple crown” in 2006. Now that he’s been traded to the spendthrift Mets, he’s pitching under a six year contract that guarantees him $137.5 million through 2013 (with a team option for 2014 that would bring the value of the contract to $150.75 million). That’s the largest contract in baseball history for a pitcher (meaning, yes, it’s more than even Matt Morris is making). [Wikipedia]

He’s kind of a big deal. He’s also filthy. It should come as no surprise if Santana racks up 20 K’s tonight, or if the Pirates muster less than a handful of hits.

However, in his only other start at Shea, Santana lost to the Brewers and was booed off the mound. Good old New York fans…

Santana pitched against (current teammate) Oliver Perez and the Bucs in an inter-league game that I attended a few years ago. The Pirates led 1-0 for most of the game, but Perez left the game after tiring late and Torres gave up a bunch of runs, and Santana picked up yet another win.

Chris Gomez is the only Buc who has any kind of decent career numbers against Santana.

Santana is a better pitcher than Ian Snell, but Snell has to be loving this big New York stage and the fact that he’s an underdog. There’s nothing the kid loves more than a little motivation to perform, and he has plenty of it tonight. A potent Met offense, a Cy Young favorite mound opponent, and a heck of a lot of people watching ought to do the trick. Ian could come out firing tonight, and don’t be shocked if he puts together a gem as well.

Predictions will be up later if I get any. Jesse and I both called a win yesterday and Dan and Ev didn’t do one. Standings are updated.
